Your technician just told you that you need a new furnace because there is a hole in the heat exchanger. Now is the time to quiz him about his findings. Make the technician take you up in the attic and show you the hole. Many air conditioning and heating companies are not honest and their only goal is to sell you a new furnace. If there is a hole or a crack in the heat exchanger, then the furnace must be changed according to the American Gas Association. Most cracks are caused by heat stress and most holes are caused by rust. The situation that caused the problem must be addressed to prevent future problems for your new heater.
There are several ways to check a heat exchanger for cracks or holes. Dyes are available that can be sprayed into the exchanger and checked with an ultraviolet light. Most technicians will remove the blower housing and shine a strong light in the burner section. If this is how the technician found the crack, have him re-create how he checked your unit. If he refuses, find another air conditioning and heating company. If the technican said he found the hole by looking at the flame, find another contractor. At Doctor Cool and Professor Heat, our technicians will be happy to show you any defect. You can always call us for a second opinion too.
